New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to launch a $250,000 social media campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of listening to music too loudly on personal MP3 players.
“With public and private support, a public-education campaign is being developed to raise awareness about safe use of personal music players…and risks of loud and long listening,” a Bloomberg official said to the NY Post.
Government health surveys indicated that “ear buds” unlike other headphones pose a greater threat to hearing. From 1988 to 2006, hearing loss rose 30 percent among teens.
The vast majority of New Yorkers on the street, subway, or gyms listen to music on an iPod, cell phone, and other MP3 devices. While research shows 85 decibels in a safe noise level, an iPod reaches 115 decibels at maximum volume. Newer devices also have a longer battery life, leading to longer listening times.

This is not the first time Bloomberg targeted noise reduction. In 2005, he signed a law to overhaul the noise code – “Project Silent Night.”
The Fund for Public Health is providing a grant for Bloomberg’s campaign. It will primarily use Facebook and Twitter to spread its message.
