North Korean Men Are Now Required To Get Kim John Un Haircuts

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

Men in North Korea are required to wear the same haircut as their supreme leader Kim Jong Un.

State-sanctioned guidelines that were introduced two weeks ago are now being rolled out throughout the county, according to media reports.

Not everyone is excited about the news.

"Our leader's haircut is very particular, if you will," one source told Radio Free Asia. "It doesn't always go with everyone since everyone has different face and head shapes."

A North Korean now living in China says the look is actually unpopular back home because it resembles the haircut of Chinese smugglers.

"Until the mid-2000s, we called it the Chinese smuggler haircut," the source told the Korea Times.

State-approved haircuts are nothing new in North Korea. Citizens could choose from a list of 18 female haircuts and 10 male haircuts. They are touted as the “most comfortable” styles that also ward off the corrupting effects of capitalism.

Single women must wear simple styles, whereas married women can add flourishes.

Young men must wear their hair no longer than 5 cm, and they should have a haircut once every 15 days. Men over the age of 50 can wear their hair up to 7 cm long, in order to cover bald spots.

North Koreans believe that longer hair takes away nutrition from the brain.

State television recently campaigned against long hair, stating, “Let us trim our hair in accordance with the Socialist lifestyle.”

Hair is a "very important issue that shows the people's cultural standards and mental and moral state,” wrote the state daily newspaper Minju Choson. "No matter how good the clothes, if one does not wear tidy shoes, one's personality will be downgraded."
