A newborn baby girl was found buried alive near a riverbed in Compton, California.

The baby's cries were heard on Nov. 27 by two women who were walking on a nearby bike path.

"She said, 'I hear a baby crying,'" Angelica Blount recalled her sister, Evangelina McCrary, saying, reports NBC Los Angeles. "I saw the baby, but not 100 percent of the baby's face."

The baby was found by sheriff’s deputies buried alive under a foot of asphalt and rubble pieces inside a crevice along the bike path, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on its Facebook page.

The muffled cries of the baby could be heard during the search.

The baby was found wrapped in a blanket but cold to the touch. She was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.

According to the police department's Facebook post, the baby was 36 to 48 hours old when she was found.

Under the Los Angeles County Safe Surrender law, the parents of the child could have taken the baby to any hospital or fire station confidentially within 72 hours without fear of prosecution, reported NBC Los Angeles.

"They could have done the right thing, and instead they came and dumped it here," Angel Flores, a nearby resident, told NBC Los Angeles. "I don't know the situation they have or what's going on, but this is not right. This is not human."

If found, the person who abandoned the child could be charged with attempted murder and child endangerment.
