Nervous Dog Coffee Bar Collects Food For Tip Jar Thief

A man was caught on camera stealing from a tip jar at an Ohio coffee shop. Now the coffee baristas are holding a food drive for him.

“He stuck his hand straight into the tip jar and took out as much as he could get and walked out like nothing happened,” Scott Moses, manager of the Nervous Dog Coffee Bar in Stow, Ohio told WKYC.

But instead of acting off anger and pressing charges, the baristas have decided to be compassionate.

“We assume that if he was desperate enough to steal tips, he’s probably in desperate times,” Moses said. “In the holiday spirit, we decided to help this guy out.”

Both Nervous Dog Coffee locations, in Stow and Akron, have started a food drive for the man. They will give him all the food collected, no questions asked. That is, if he decides to come forward.

“If he does see this, I’d tell him to come back into the Nervous Dog Coffee Bar in Stow. We’d love to have you back,” Moses said.

But the shop’s generosity started a debate on their Facebook page with some people saying the shop is rewarding bad behavior.

“If definitely started a discourse. We are trying to show awareness that people are going through hard times,” Moses said.

The first to donate was the barista who served the man that day.

Amidst all the attention, the coffee shop thanked people for their response on their Facebook Wednesday.

“Now that we’ve got the world’s attention, let’s MAKE THIS FOOD DRIVE COUNT!” the post read.

So far, the Nervous Dog Coffee Bar has collected about three boxes of food. If the tip jar thief does not come forward, the food will be donated to the Akron/Canton Food Bank by Christmas.
