Plane Crashes Into Two California Homes, Three Killed

| by David Bonner

A plane crashed into two houses and sparked a huge fire in Riverside, California on Feb. 27.

According to Riverside Fire Chief Michael Moore, two adults and three teenagers were on the plane, reports the Daily Mail. Moore initially stated that four people died in the crash, but authorities later revised that number to three.

The husband, wife and three teens aboard the plane were reportedly returning to San Jose after a weekend cheerleading conference at Disneyland. Their Cessna 310 crashed shortly after taking off from Riverside Municipal Airport.

The pilot, who was reportedly the wife, is said to have survived the crash and was seen crawling out of one of the houses with her clothes on fire. One of the teens also survived, and managed to speak with firefighters en route to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries.

It is believed that no one on the ground was killed, although a person from one of the houses was reportedly taken to surgery. The two houses were destroyed, and there was minor damage to others in the vicinity. Nearby residents were evacuated and taken to a community center.

The reason for the crash wasn't immediately known. However, Riverside fire Captain Tyler Reynolds suspected that weather could have been a factor, although he did not elaborate.

Witnesses said the crash rocked the residential neighborhood and sounded like a massive explosion, reports the Los Angeles CBS affiliate, KCAL. "It just sounded like a bomb," resident Ana Duran said. "I heard people screaming and yelling."

One man, identified only as Ernesto, said he helped rescue the pilot but failed to find any other passengers. "It was a girl, it was a lady," he said of the pilot. "She was speaking. She said there was three others on the plane... We looked inside and couldn't see anything, the plane was just gone."
