Muslim Woman Kicked Out Of Store For Headscarf (Video)

A Muslim woman was told to leave a Family Dollar store in Gary, Indiana, on Aug. 1 because her headscarf was obstructing her face (video below).

Sarah Zawjahtul AbdAllah Salaam filmed the store manager telling her to leave and uploaded the video to Facebook, where it has gone viral.

"Yes, ma'am, if you can’t remove that from your face I need you to leave the store," the manager tells Salaam in the video.

"This is a religious garment, ma'am," Salaam says.

The manager insists:

"But you have to understand too that this is a high crime area where we get robbed a lot. You need to remove that from your face or remove yourself from the store ... You need to remove that from your face or remove yourself from the store, please. I’m the manager, and I’m telling you to leave my store ... Have a blessed day ... My name is Janie, and have a blessed day."

The manager repeatedly tells Salaam to "have a blessed day," but Salaam fires back: "This is a country where it’s freedom of religion and it’s freedom of speech. I have a right to wear whatever I want to wear. There’s women that come in here with bikini tops on."

"I’ll have the cops come and remove you, thank you," the manager replies.

Salaam walks out of the store.

Family Dollar has not commented on the incident.

In April, a woman said that she was refused service by a clerk a Family Dollar store In New Orleans because she is gay.

"The cashier was just loudly stating her opinion on her disdain for gay people," Melissa Langford told WWL-TV. "Eventually I spoke up because I couldn't take it anymore."

The clerk was caught on Langford's cellphone video stating, "I'm not dealing with these two."

Langford adds, "She won't serve us because I'm gay and he doesn't like anti-gay people."

Another clerk served Langford and the other customer.

At the time, Family Dollar's corporate office said in a statement:

"We take incidents like this very seriously. We have a Code of Ethics in place that ensures inclusion for customers and associates and helps to ensure good customer care. The code specifically forbids unprofessional conduct and comments on sexual orientation, among other matters. Any activity that goes against this code is simply not how we expect our stores to do business. This situation is currently under investigation."
