An inquest into the death of a 3-month-old baby girl was recently held in England, and the baby's mother was eventually allowed to walk free.

The inquest heard how Yvonne Adkins, 32, and her partner Omoleye Babatumde Peter, whom she’d known very briefly, were engaged in a nine-hour sexual romp while Adkins' 3-month-old daughter, Shanelle, was left in a baby rocker at Adkins’s Meir, Staffordshire, home in England, reports.

Shanelle was found dead on the morning of May 8, 2014 -- after Adkins spent the night drinking whiskey with Peter. A coroner ruled that Shanelle, who had suffered from reflux and vomiting issues, ultimately succumbed to "sudden and unexpected death in infancy.”

Adkins, however, was reportedly aware of Shanelle's stomach issues when she left her alone for the night. In fact, the inquest heard how the baby had several reflux episodes in the weeks before her death.

In August, the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to child cruelty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, which was suspended for two years.

"Your desire to engage in some sexual activity with someone you hardly knew resulted in you leaving your child downstairs when you knew it was not appropriate to do that,” Judge David Fletcher told Adkins in court in August, according to the Daily Star.

"You made a catastrophic decision that you will have to live with for the rest of your life," Fletcher added.

Adkins’ lawyer, Nicola Bell, admitted that her client didn’t behave well.

"She was reckless in her attention towards the child,” she said in court in August. "She prioritized herself momentarily over the child with devastating consequences.

"This is a mother who has lost a child. She deals with that on a daily basis.”
