On May 23, a 21-year-old Army veteran was killed after a suspect in a high-speed chase hit him with the vehicle. Now, his grieving mother has found comfort from an unusual source.

Taylor Thyfault, 21, was training as a cadet with the Colorado State Patrol at the time of the fatal crash. He had allegedly pushed a bystander out of the way before being hit, PIX11 reports.

Thyfault's mother, Carole Adler, said she was devastated.

“Every day, it hits me like a ton of bricks, when I can't text him,” she told KUSA. "We're just that close. Everything that happened in his life was in my life.”

The urge to text her son never left Adler, so one day, weeks after his death, she texted Thyfault’s phone. By that time, Sgt. Kell Husley from the Greeley Police Department had Thyfault’s phone number. When Husley saw Adler had texted Thyfault’s number saying that she missed and loved her son, he decided to reply.

"So I sent a text back and identified myself, and said 'I'm with the Greeley Police Department, and I don't think your texts are going where you think they are,’" he said.

Husley offered to change the number, but Adler told him to keep it because he was doing the job her son dreamed of.

Husley, a veteran of the police force, felt connected to Thyfault.

"He's eager," Husley said. "He's excited, and he's willing to do a job that can sometimes be really unthankful."

Adler sometimes still texts Husley, to ask him about his day and remind him to be safe.
