After receiving an "awkward" text message from her daughter, a mother got the worst news of her life.
On April 22, Jessica Leigh White, a 21-year-old from Troy, Michigan, reportedly received a text message from her friend Jordan McClanahan, 23, asking her to spend time with him that day.
"She felt sorry for him for some reason and he was always asking her to hang out with him," Karen White, Jessica’s mother, told The Detroit News. "She told me she was going to tell him she had to get home in a few hours because she had a baby-sitting job."
While some news outlets have reported that McClanahan may have been Jessica's boyfriend, Karen said Jessica and McClanahan were not romantically involved.
Later that night, between 2 to 3 a.m. on April 23, Jessica sent a text message to her mother after witnessing an argument between Jordan and his father. Her phone was reportedly turned off roughly a half hour after that text was sent.
According to Michael McClanahan, Jordan’s father, his son had dropped and broken his phone that night, which prompted the fight, The Detroit Free Press reports.
"I chewed him out, and she just happened to be here," Michael told the newspaper.
The following day, on April 24, Karen reported Jessica as missing. Jordan told officials that she went to visit someone in the 7 Mile and John R area of Detroit. Authorities searched his home, and Jordan helped the victim’s family in the search efforts.
On May 3, Jordan admitted to the Troy police department that he was responsible for Jessica’s death.
"It's disturbing to know that this gentleman was assisting the family in attempting to locate a person that he knew [was dead]," Hazel Park Police Chief Martin Barner said. "We know they have been friends since grade school."
Although the police had visited Jordan's residence previously, it was not until the third visit that Jordan revealed where Jessica's body was hidden.
"Her body was found in an enclosed attic with only one access door, which was in his attached bedroom,” Barner said, according to The Detroit News.
After her daughter’s body had been identified, Karen revealed her suspicions about the last text message she received from Jessica.
"Things are pretty confusing right now," Karen told The Detroit News. " ... But I knew something was wrong, and I knew something had happened in that house."
An autopsy determined Jessica’s death to be caused by "strangulation by ligature." Jordan is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder and desecration of a body, according to WJBK.
Jordan’s family, who said they did not know about the murder, have been cooperating with the investigation.
"It’s as new to us as it is to everybody else," Michael told The Detroit Free Press. "It’s just a shock."
