A Michigan mother has been arrested after she allegedly trapped her 11-year-old son in a car before trying to set it on fire in a cemetery.

The 48-year-old mom, who has not yet been named, drove to Roselawn Memorial Park in Lasalle Township with her son, then bound his wrists and locked him the car which she then attempted to set on fire, according to WXIA.

Police arrived at the scene after the woman's husband, 50, called to say that his wife may have hurt the child. When authorities got to the graveyard, they saw the woman's 2014 Ford Focus with smoke coming out of it.

The woman and her son were not inside the vehicle, but were instead in a different part of the cemetery, speaking to staff. Staff from the cemetery had freed the boy from the wrist bindings.

The mom had started by trying to set the trunk on fire while the 11-year-old was in the car. Deputies and firefighters later extinguished the flames.

"The mother later attempted to ignite a fire using gasoline inside the passenger compartment where the boy sat," said a police news release.

"This fire did not ignite while the boy struggled to free himself from the vehicle," said police. "The mother then freed the boy from the vehicle and they walked away until locating an employee from the cemetery."

The woman was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and was charged with arson and attempted murder. She was booked into Monroe County Jail.

The boy was also taken to hospital, and was later released, according to Monroe News.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the mother's motive.

Another mom in North Carolina was charged with attempted murder when she allegedly tried to smother her 1-year-old son with a pillow and her hands at Levine's Children's Hospital in Charlotte, reports WSOC.

Maggie Dixon, 32, was filmed on video surveillance cameras appearing to try to suffocate the toddler, who had been hospitalized for a respiratory condition. Investigators said the child had suspected pneumonia. Hospital staff were alerted to an abnormality in the child's breathing, and viewed the surveillance video.

According to police, Dixon tried to suffocate the boy four times in 15 minutes.

Dixon worked as a respiratory therapist from 2008 to 2011 before her license expired.

"Hopefully, she gets help serious help, because I can't fathom suffocating your own child,” said Bill Croft, the executive director of the North Carolina Respiratory Board and one of Dixon's former teachers. “It's stunning to even suggest that somebody I know would do that."

The mom was charged with first-degree attempted murder and child abuse. According to police, there were no signs that the baby had previously been abused.

The child is expected to be put in his father's custody when he is released from the hospital. The couple is separated.
