A Florida woman and her roommate are facing serious charges after they posted pictures online of her 10-year-old son dressed like a girl, which they forced the child to do as a form of discipline for reportedly wetting the bed.
Christle Prado of Winter Garden, Florida reportedly posted photos on Facebook of her son in tears while wearing girl’s clothing and makeup, which prompted relatives who saw the photos to contact authorities. Prado’s roommate and landlord, Keith Driscoll, allegedly came up with the idea as “a way to discipline him,” according to WFTV News.
According to ClickOrlando.com, a neighbor claimed that the boy was also forced to "run around outside while others pointed and laughed." The neighbor also revealed that the boy and his two siblings had been subject to this kind of abuse for "a long time."
After being informed of the situation, police visited Prado’s home to find the boy in the front yard raking leaves. He was apparently still visibly shaken from the ordeal.
“It was clear to me and anyone else who saw these pictures that this boy was clearly distraught and fearful about what was happening to him,” Department of Children and Families representative Kristi Gray said. “It becomes mental injury when the child is traumatized during the event and after the event.” Gray referred to the photos as “disturbing.”
According to The Daily Mail, the boy's grandmother says he has a "known mental illness."
Prado told police that she went along with Driscoll’s idea because she did not want to cause trouble with her living arrangement. She and Driscoll have been charged with child cruelty, a second-degree felony. They are also being charged with infliction of mental injury on a child.
