Police in North Carolina found the remains of a child in their search for a missing 3-year-old.

Jordan Ann Dumont went missing from her Gaston County home Aug. 15, according to WJZY.

The Gaston County Police Chief confirmed the remains were those of Jordan. They were found between 500 and 750 yards from the family home at around 11 a.m. Aug. 16. Police said they believe the toddler was murdered within the past 24 to 36 hours.

William McCullen, the boyfriend of Jordan’s mother, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police say they believe Jordan was dead before she was reported missing.

McCullen told police he put Jordan down for a nap about 1 p.m. Aug. 15. McCullen then said he took a nap and woke up around 3:30 p.m. to find Jordan gone and the front door open. He told WSOC Jordan’s disappearance was “like a bad dream.”

Police launched a major search operation Aug. 15. However, neighbors said they were unhappy that officers allegedly suspended their search overnight and only recommenced it at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 16.

Police Chief Joseph Ramey denied this allegation.

“We’ve been working through the night, contrary to popular belief,” Ramey said. “We've been out here all night. In addition, we've been following up additional leads that weren't on this scene.”

Around 100 volunteers assisted the police with their search.

“I lost it. I mean, I broke down like a baby,” Ronnie Adams said after the news broke that Jordan’s remains had been found. “It kills me knowing that someone could sink to the level of doing this to a child.”

“I’m just sick to my stomach of a situation like this,” another said.

Later on Aug. 16, police confirmed they had been called out to the home 49 times over recent years, including for noise disturbances, domestic incidents and thefts. But the authorities acknowledged they were unsure whether these calls were all related to Jaylene Dumont, Jordan’s mother, and McCullen.
