A brave mom fought off a would-be kidnapper who tried to abduct her daughter at a Dollar General store in Hernando, Florida on June 7 (video below).

According to police, Craig Bonello dragged a 13-year-old girl on the floor, but the girl's mom ran after them, grabbed her child and eventually laid on top of her daughter to stop the attempted abduction, notes WTSP.

The store manager called for Citrus County sheriff's deputy Jonathan Behnen, who was outside of the store, to stop Bonello. The off-duty lawman used his patrol car to block Bonello's car, pulled a gun on the suspect, ordered him out of his car and arrested him.

"Behnen is a bona fide hero today," Capt. Ricky Grant stated, according to WTVT. "If it weren't for him, this guy would have gotten away."

"This certainly supports the reason why we let deputies take their vehicles home," Grant told WTSP. "Thank goodness Dep. Behnen was there to catch Bonello before he got away."

The mother and daughter were not physically injured, but understandably upset. The girl has been offered counseling.

"In my 10 years on the road I have never seen anything like this," Sgt. Craig Callahan said, according to WTVT. "He truly intended to abduct this child right in front of everyone in the store."

"She may have saved her daughter's life today," Callahan added. "I don't exactly know a motive, but I'm sure it wasn't a good one."

Bonello is not a registered sex offender, but the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said he has a criminal record that includes trespassing, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and multiple misdemeanors.

Bonello is charged with kidnapping and child abuse, and is being held with no bond, according to a June 8 Facebook post by the sheriff's office.
