An 8-month-old girl survived a house fire in Baltimore after the family's dog shielded her from the flames (video below). Unfortunately, the dog did not survive.

The Baltimore City Fire Department received a report of a house fire at about 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 14, BCFD spokesman Samuel Johnson said.

When crews arrived, firefighters were told that the child was trapped on the home's second floor. The crew quickly rescued the girl. She was taken to the hospital shortly after.

The girl's mother, Erika Poremski, was home when the fire broke out. Firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Poremski said she walked out to her car and when she turned around, she saw the house was in flames. Her daughter, Viviana, was inside.

"I just heard her crying and I couldn't get to her," the mother told WBAL. "I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn't [get her out]. Nobody could."

Poremski burned her hands and face when she went back into the house to find her daughter.

When firefighters found Viviana, she was on the ground being covered by Poremski's dog, Polo, who was shielding her with his body.

"She only had burns on her side because of it," Poremski said. "He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn't even come downstairs to get out the door."

Viviana was revived by paramedics and survived the fire with severe burns on her face, arms, and side. Polo did not make it, however.

"He was my first baby and now I lost him," Poremski said. "And I'm just praying I don't lose her. She's all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don't understand it. I just don't know why this stuff happens."

The mother says she has been grateful for all the support she's received. A GoFundMe page has raised over $6,400.

Poremski says Viviana's condition is still serious and continues to be monitored.

"She's doing the best she can right now," she said. And she's fighting and that's it. She's a really good girl I just hope she's OK."
