| by Michael Howard

A Tennessee woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after reportedly stabbing her teenage son with a pocket knife.

Toni Coleman, 40, was driving her children to school when she got into a dispute with her 16-year-old son, reports WMC. As they approached an intersection, Coleman allegedly pulled out a pocket knife, reached into the back seat and stabbed her son in the leg.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Coleman dropped her son off at school a short time later.

Coleman reportedly told police she assaulted her son to protect her daughter.

"Toni Coleman advised that she swiped at her son with the knife in defense of her daughter," Memphis police wrote in an affidavit. "She advised that her son had been assaulting his sister, her daughter, for a while. He is very aggressive and disrespectful. She said that he was acting out in the car and she was afraid he would hurt her daughter or her."

When the boy arrived at school, officials immediately called for help. He was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition was listed as non-critical.

Memphis Police Department spokesperson Louis Brownlee commended the school for taking swift action.

"That just goes to show the care that administration and teachers here have for their students," he said.
