A St. Louis mother sacrificed her own life pushing her 10-year-old daughter out of harms way when an SUV accelerated towards them in a parking lot.
Colleen Segbers, 33, only had a moment to react as she left a St. Louis Walgreens with her daughter Gwen shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly lost control and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said. The driver, a woman in her late 50s, swerved to miss the building and plowed into Segbers, who was fatally pinned between the car and a pillar outside the store.
Her daughter wasn’t injured.
“The mother was actually able to push the child out of the way of the vehicle as they were trying to avoid being hit,” Cpt. Gregg Favre of the St. Louis Fire Department told KDSK. “The child was not struck. However, she was pretty upset given the circumstances.”
The driver had just dropped off her husband at the store, authorities said. She thought the SUV was in park when it began moving forward. Instead of hitting the brake she accidently pushed the accelerator.
The driver was treated by EMS for minor injuries and taken to a local hospital.
No charges have been filed following the collision.
