Mom Arrested After Infant Found In Trash Can Mere Hours After Being Born
A 28-year-old woman from Greenville, South Carolina was arrested and is now facing serious charges after authorities say she threw her infant child in a trash can.
The Greenville Police Department responded to calls on Monday that a newborn baby was found in a trash can. When officers arrived, they discovered the baby wrapped in a pink blanket, placed in a plastic bag, and thrown into the garbage can.
Police were later able to identify the mother as 28-year-old Sharon Lenise Ferguson. Ferguson was arrested and is now facing charges of unlawful neglect of a child and attempted murder.
Thankfully, the baby was alive when police found him, and reports say he is in stable condition.
"I saw the baby after they had pulled it out of the trash can and the fire department got here and I saw that the baby was moving," said witness Ouida Neasley to the Charlotte Observer.
Police are currently investigating the incident, and it’s not yet clear why Ferguson decided to get rid of her child. The baby boy was reportedly born at some point on Monday, just hours before Ferguson got rid of him around 4:30 in the afternoon.
