Whitney's Tire and Auto Repair in Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently announced that it will not serve "ghetto people," but the owner insists it's not about race.

After resident Madison Callahan wrote a negative review on Yelp, Jim S., who said he was the owner and manager of the company, fired back a racist reply, notes Mic.

"Most reviews will be left by blacks from Ypsilanti because I don't want them to call here," Jim S. wrote. "Nothing against them, but given an examination, I found a way to make a boatload more money avoiding them doing commercial water heaters."

"Ghetto folks need to stay in the ghetto and not come to Ann Arbor," Jim S. concluded.

Shalynn Renee Vaughn, a student at the University of Michigan, called the repair shop to get a price quote and recorded Jim S. reportedly saying: "There's no law against refusing service to ghetto people. I don't serve f----- monkeys, little f------ primates."

Jim S. told Mic that "ghetto" has nothing to do with race, and added: "We really don't want to serve ghetto people, that's a fact."

Jim S. was asked about using the phrase "ghetto people" by Mic and said, "Race has nothing to do with this, let me clarify. What we're trying to avoid is people who number one can't afford service."

He later admitted, "I understand that a lot of people find racism to be the worst thing in the world."

Jane Haskins, a lawyer for two decades, noted in LegalZoom: "The entire United States is covered by the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination by privately owned places of public accommodation on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin."

"Places of 'public accommodation' include hotels, restaurants, theaters, banks, health clubs and stores. Nonprofit organizations such as churches are generally exempt from the law."
