Local police have launched an investigation into a young boy’s mother after she allegedly tied him to the iron railings of a balcony.
Horrified by what they saw, concerned neighbors took pictures of the child and shared them on social networking sites, which police found and used as reason to raid the family’s home.
According to the family’s neighbors, the boy’s mother roped him up to the balcony with the consent of the father, who watched.
“It was a very creepy situation because it was horrible to see a little boy tied hands and foot with scarves to the window of the house,” neighbor Mariza Guerrero said.
Police eventually rescued the boy from his Xalapa home in the southeast Mexican province of Veracruz. The family has three other children, though it’s unclear if they were also removed from the home.
Though the family is known for being strictly Christian, police are investigating into potential ritual activity.
“The authorities are investigating this horrible act in order to punish the guilty parties,” Alberto Silva Ramos, the head of Social Communication in Veracruz, said. “Such things must not be allowed to occur in modern-day Mexico.”
Mexican authorities have refused to release the family’s name in order to respect the boy’s privacy.
This was not the first instance of unusual treatment in the area. In May, a grandmother allegedly tied up her grandson with adhesive tape and shared his pictures online because he was “irritating” her. She was later arrested.
