A teacher in Memphis is under fire after a cellphone video surfaced of him putting a student in a chokehold.

The teacher attempted to break up an altercation between two students when he placed one of them in a chokehold.

He may soon be fired and prosecuted after the mother of a student showed the video to police.

The video itself is less than half a minute long, but shows the teacher trying to break up the two students before getting into an altercation with one of the boys.

A police officer saw a young black couple drive by and pulled them over. What he did next left them stunned:

"(It was) heartbreaking. It brought tears to my eyes, " said Shunkita Qualls, mother of the boy who was put into a chokehold. "No mother wants to send their child to school and have to see something like that."

While speaking to FOX13, Qualls said that she believed the teacher used excessive force, even revealing all of the bruises her 16-year-old son received on his neck and arms.

She has since filed a police report hoping to seek justice for her son.

"The other boy in the video clearly states he walked out of the room," she described, "so there's no reason to slam him on the ground, none of that, choke him, my son has asthma. He said while he was on the ground, he can't breathe, he's calm."

According to the Shelby County School District's policy, teachers are allowed to use "reasonable force" to move students in the event of an emergency, with the term being defined as "the minimum physical force required lasting for the shortest time predictable, to correct or restrain a student."

Qualls does not believe that the actions taken against her son count as "reasonable force."

"I don't understand how this can be justifiable, because the fight has stopped, and the other child went outside," she said. "What part of this did this man, this man should've stopped and just leave him alone. He was already calm, he told him, he said, 'I'm calm.'"

The school has since released a statement addressing the issue saying: "We are aware a fight took place yesterday between two students. This fight resulted in a teacher, attempting to break up the melee. School security and administrators have reviewed the video and felt that the actions taken by the teacher were used to prevent the student from retaliating against the other student."

As of April 16, 2015, no charges have been filed though police officers are investigating the matter.

Both students received a one-week suspension from school.
