NYPD Says New Unit Will Combat Terrorists, Protesters (Video)

NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton announced today that the city will form a 350-person Strategic Response Group to deal with lone wolf attacks, terrorists and protesters.

“It is designed for dealing with events like our recent protests, or incidents like Mumbai or what just happened in Paris,” stated Bratton, noted CBS New York (video below).

“They’ll be equipped and trained in ways that our normal patrol officers are not,” added Bratton. “They’ll be equipped with all the extra heavy protective gear, with the long rifles and machine guns, unfortunately sometimes necessary in these instances.”

Bratton stated that the Strategic Response Group would be trained with high-tech weaponry for “disorder control and counterterrorism protection capabilities.”

According to a 2012 report by the Global Justice Clinic at New York University's School of Law and the Walter Leitner International Human Rights Clinic at Fordham Law School, the NYPD violated the rights of Occupy Wall Street protesters 130 times.

Reuters reported that some of those alleged violations included "excessive force, unjustified arrests and pervasive surveillance" by the NYPD.

The ACLU reported in 2009 that a leaked document from the U.S. Department of Defense referred to protesters as "low-level terrorism." After it was made public, the Pentagon pulled that reference, noted Fox News.
