CIA director John Brennan was the subject of journalist Michael Hastings' next big story before his death in a suspicious car accident on June 18.

Hastings sent an email to coworkers hours before his death saying he was “onto a big story” and needed “to go off the radar for a bit.”

That story might be published by Rolling Stone magazine within the next two weeks.

“John Brennan was Hastings next expose project,” said San Diego 6 News reporter Kimberly Dvorak.

Dvorak also mentioned an internal email by the "global intelligence" company Stratfor, which has U.S. government security contracts. The ominous-sounding email was posted on WikiLeaks and reads:

Brennan is behind the witch hunts of investigative journalists learning information from inside the beltway sources. Note — There is specific tasker from the WH to go after anyone printing materials negative to the Obama agenda (oh my.) Even the FBI is shocked. The Wonder Boys must be in meltdown mode...

The email was dated 2010, when Brennan was a counterterrorism advisor for the Obama administration.

Dvorak claims that a recent email from the CIA to her acknowledged that "Hastings was working on a CIA story."

She also received a separate email from the CIA that read: "Without commenting on information disseminated by WikiLeaks, any suggestion that Director Brennan has ever attempted to infringe on constitutionally-protected press freedoms is offensive and baseless.”
