While fast food workers all over the country are fighting to get paid higher hourly wages, McDonald’s is apparently looking for a bigger solution to their problem.
Various outlets are reporting that McDonald’s is currently testing automated cashiers in the hopes that they will soon roll out all over the country. The machines are touch screen and will enable customer to order and pay for their food without having to wait in line and interact with a live cashier.
Similar machines are already being used in Europe, and now, the automated cashier is being tested at a store in Romeoville, Illinois, according to reports and one Reddit user.

“I believe this store is in Romeoville, IL. It's next door to their Innovation Center,” said a Reddit user. “This McDonald’s is actually pretty unique. First of all it’s owned by McDonald’s, it’s not a franchise. Second, this is the store where McDonald’s tests all the new technology. New griddle? It gets tested here first. New ordering monitors, new deep fryer, all tested here first. If it doesn’t work here, they don’t offer it to their franchisees. They test everything in this store for YEARS before it gets mass produced so they’re sure it works well and is cost-effective.”
“So whatever that store looks like now, all new McDonald’s stores will look the same, with the same technology, 4-5 years into the future,” the user, who says he used to work for a McDonald’s supplier, added.
As some have pointed out, this isn’t particularly groundbreaking, as Sheetz convenience stores have been utilizing the same touchscreen, automated ordering technology for years. Still, it will be interesting to see McDonald’s evolve in such an interesting way.
Whether or not this is actually a response to the demand for higher wages by workers remains to be seen, but the timing seems to make sense.
