McDonald’s Squeezes Out Heinz Ketchup After More Than 40-Year Relationship

McDonald’s has cited management changes at Heinz as the reason why the fast food giant will no longer be using Heinz ketchup.

Heinz, which is based in Pittsburgh, recently appointed former Burger King Worldwide CEO Bernardo Hees to run the company. Hees also serves as vice chairman of the board of Miami-based Burger King, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," McDonald's said in a statement.

Mail Online reports that the switch from Heinz is likely to be more apparent in the United Kingdom and other restaurants across the world, with ketchup in most of the franchise's restaurants in the United States already supplied from elsewhere.

Heinz disappeared from many of McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. in the 1970s after the company couldn't meet the fast food chain’s demands due to a tomato shortage. Most of the ketchup used at McDonald’s in the U.S. has been branded “fancy ketchup” with the exception of the Pittsburgh and Minneapolis markets where Heinz was still being used.

"It's a global transition to other suppliers. Heinz was only used in two markets in the U.S.," said Lisa McComb, director of McDonald's U.S. media relations.

Mail Online also reports that Burger King will continue to use Heinz products in around 80 percent of its restaurants around the world, according to a spokesman.
