As their parents' unconscious bodies lay on the floor, all the frightened kids could do was cry.
At only ages 1 month, 2, 3 and 7 years old, they had just witnessed their parents overdose.
Their father was dead and their mother was barely alive.
When a neighbor called police to the apartment in Birmingham, Alabama, it was up to them to figure out how to put the pieces of their broken hearts and family back together.

Officer Michelle Burton knew what she had to do.
"Last night, my wife Michelle Burton told me she would be late getting off work because of a call she was on where the parents of 4 small children had both overdosed," wrote her husband, Sgt. Brian Burton, on social media. "Michelle said the father was dead and the mother was critical."
What she did next touched the hearts of so many, the post quickly went viral: Before getting on with the rest of her police work, she hugged the baby close.

"She spent the rest of the night taking care of these babies," explained her husband. "She got home at 4 this morning. I've never seen her more beautiful than in this picture. What an incredible woman."
Together, the police officers and various social workers rounded up the diapers and foster home numbers as they placed the children into protective custody, AL.com reports.
It's just one of the many hats jobs police officers take on while on duty, Birmingham South Precinct commander Capt. Ron Sellers said.
"A police officer's job is very hard and very demanding. We come across a lot of scenes of a tragic nature, especially when children are involved,'' said Sellers. "Our first priority is to help the injured, but then we turn our focus on the children to make sure they are safe and well-taken care of. We're glad our officer was able to help here."
Meanwhile, their mother, who is 35, was in hospital in critical condition. She has since recovered.
"It was a real sad situation,'' Lt. David Rockett said. "At least one of the parents survived. If there's a silver lining, it's that."
