Neighbors and other residents of Rosharon, Texas, ridiculed a homeowner for building a plastic dam around his house, but now he gets the last laugh.

Days before a massive flood devastated Brazoria County, Randy Wagner had the foresight to build a dam around his home.

“Your family being relocated and you know it’s heartbreaking to know that that could happen,” Wagner told KHOU.

The homeowner learned about AquaDam online after Brazos River Authority warned residents about imminent flooding. Wagner bought the dam in Louisiana and learned how to install it with the help of two others.

A police officer saw a young black couple drive by and pulled them over. What he did next left them stunned:

He filled up filled up 400 feet of 30-inch-high tubes made of plastic and fabric with water.

“I was the crazy guy. Everybody was kinda going by, laughing at me. But today they are really impressed with this AquaDam,” Wagner told KHOU.

The product was a small price to pay compared to the destruction that would have followed.

He said of the cost: “$8,300 is to me a small investment on a house that could have 2 feet of water in it and cost me $150,000 in repairs.”

As the Brazos River began to overflow, flooding houses with a record-breaking 27 inches of water, Wagner knew his house would be safe.

As military vehicles and airboats evacuated thousands of residents from their homes, Wagner’s house was sitting high and dry.

“To not know what that level was going to stop at, I needed to prepare for something that no one has seen,” said Wagner.

According AquaDam’s website, the product is branded as the “world’s largest water filled cofferdam” -- a necessary measure for Texas and other areas that get torrential rainstorms every year.

Wagner hopes the incident serves as a learning lesson for others to take risks when it comes to ensuring their safety.
