Boys, 1 and 3, Thrown Over Bridge By Father, Found Alive

| by Michael Howard

Two young boys were found alive after their father jumped off a New Jersey bridge with them in a murder-suicide attempt.

The 1- and 3-year-old brothers were transported to a hospital where they are expected to make full recoveries, according to WNBC. Their father, identified by New Jersey State Police as John Spincken, was killed in the 100-foot fall.

The Oct. 24 incident began with a domestic dispute between the boys' parents. Spincken reportedly drove off in his SUV after threatening to harm himself and the children.

"Happened very quickly and [the domestic disturbance] became secondary to why we were called there after he threatened to do harm to the boys," Pequannock Police Capt. Christopher DePuyt told WPIX.

Police were able to track Spincken's whereabouts through the GPS unit in his mobile phone. He had stopped at a highway bridge over the Wanaque River.

"That bridge is a place where suicides have been attempted and committed before," DePuyt explained.

Spincken reportedly climbed on top of his vehicle and over an 8-foot fence designed to prevent people from committing suicide. Then he jumped with both sons in his arms.

All three landed in the woods underneath the overpass.

Spincken was pronounced dead at the scene. One of his children suffered a collapsed lung while the other suffered a spinal injury, WNBC reports.

Both boys suffered concussions, according to WPIX.

"It's nothing short of a miracle," DePuyt said. "I think fortunately the trees ended up breaking some of the fall for the children."

Spincken and his wife lived in their home for the past year. There were no previous reports of domestic disturbances, according to police records.
