Man Attacked By Pit Bulls While Trying To Save Dog (Video)

| by Sean Kelly

Terrifying footage of a man jumping on top of his dog to protect it from two pit bulls, and being mauled in the process, went viral (video below).

In the clip, Huntington Beach, California, resident John Brady can be seen being viciously attacked by the two pit bulls as he shielded his dog, Josh, from harm.

Brady told KCAL that the incident occurred when he took a boat trip to Santa Catalina Island with his dog. He was walking the Jack Russell terrier on a pier when the two pit bulls suddenly attacked.

Brady attempted to protect his dog, but the pit bulls attacked him instead -- ripping off a piece of his calf and biting him on both arms.

“All I did is lift my dog off the ground and I was being chewed on instantly,” he told KTLA. “I knew I was going to die. I was screaming for help, and everybody was just watching ... until the last second.”

At one point, Brady pulled out a pocket knife and started stabbing the dogs in an attempt to get them to back off.

“It was so scary,” he said. “I was just face to the ground, and just being chewed on by ... I couldn't even call them dogs.”

Patrol officers were ultimately able to pull the dogs away, but the damage had been done. Brady was airlifted to UCLA Harbor Medical Center for treatment.

“They attacked my little dog, Josh,” he told KCAL from the hospital. “Almost killed him, almost killed me.”

Brady was given skin grafts on his legs, and will need several surgeries to make a full recovery.

The woman who owns the pit bulls reportedly agreed to have both dogs euthanized as a result of the attack. Josh was treated for a cut and released from the veterinarian's office.

“My dog is alive, and I put my body over him because he’s my best friend in the world,” Brady said.

Brady’s son, Brooke Brady, subsequently launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Josh’s recovery expenses:

Unfortunately, we have a financial burden to absorb with continued vet bills, hospital bills and on going care, as well as the ever expensive helicopter ride that my dad had take in order to get him to safety. Though we will definitely be seeking financial support from the pit bulls owners, (based on feedback received) we are not hopeful that our financial needs will be met. We thank you again for all your love and support and appreciate your donation more than you know.

Since the story went viral, fundraising efforts proved successful, bringing in over $16,000.
