Yesterday afternoon, motorists in west Dallas were unwilling witnesses to a gruesome public suicide.
Witnesses saw a man scribble a message, which appears to read “no codigo codbo,” on the side of his van before tying a rope around his neck and attaching the other end around a fire hydrant. The man then got back in his car, accelerated and decapitated himself. No one else was harmed during the incident and the car stopped on its own.
It’s not clear what the message on the van means, although “no codigo” is spanish for “no code.” Some speculate that “codbo” is an acronym for the popular video game “Call of Duty: Black Ops.” The Call of Duty video game franchise releases a new edition of their game nearly annually.

Suicide in adult men has been dubbed a “silent epidemic,” and has not been extensively studied. It’s believed suicide is more pervasive among men than women due lack of public awareness and the reluctance of many men to seek mental health help. Though it’s unknown how old this suicide victim was, men between the ages of 25 and 54 make up most of the fatalities for suicide.
