A Brazilian man died after a cow fell through a roof on top of him and doctors at a local hospital failed to attend to his internal bleeding for hours.

The 45-year-old Joao Maria de Souza and his wife Leni had been lying in bed when the cow fell through their roof and eight feet down onto Joao Maria on Wednesday night, according to the Telegraph.

Leni and the cow were reportedly uninjured in the incident, according to the Herald Sun.

The de Souza’s house is located in southeast Brazil and near a farm, from where the cow is suspected to have wandered.

The house’s back is connected to a hill, so the cow could have walked onto the roof.

Joao Maria was brought to the hospital with no apparent injuries other than a fractured leg, but he was also bleeding internally at the time.

He died from internal bleeding after waiting for doctors to see him for multiple hours.

Carlos Correa, Joao Maria’s brother-in-law, said Joao Maria died because of the hours he spent unexamined in the hospital.

“In my view it wasn't the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined,” Correa said.

Joao Maria’s mother said her son’s death felt unfair after he had overcome meningitis as a young child.

"Now he's lying in his bed and gets crushed to death by a cow,” she said. “There's no justice in the world.”
