A 22-year-old driver fleeing from police Wednesday was decapitated when he crashed into the back of a flatbed truck on a busy expressway.

The young man, identified as Leroy Samuel, was driving in his black Infiniti G35 Sedan with his girlfriend in the passenger seat at about noon, reports the Daily Mail. Police say an officer on foot tried to issue him a traffic citation, but witnesses claim they saw Samuel speed off to evade police and that police cruisers followed him on the Gowanus Expressway.

While attempting to exit the highway via a ramp, Samuel reportedly slammed into the back of a truck and was instantly decapitated. He died at the scene, according to police.

Joseph Vega, a witness who was riding his bicycle to work at the time, told the New York Post that the man was driving at least 70 to 80 miles per hour. He said the trailer was stopped at a traffic light when Samuel collided into it.

“Highway patrol was chasing him,” Vega said. “When I went to see what happened to the driver, he had no head. His head was in the back seat. It was horrible.”

Vega added that both the driver and his girlfriend were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

After the crash, another witness said he saw Samuel’s girlfriend get out of the vehicle limping. She reportedly tried to get away but couldn’t because she was hurt, reports the Daily News. She was taken to the hospital and complained of back and neck pain, reports NBC News.

It is unclear why police tried to stop Samuel and what he had done to warrant a traffic citation.
