Most Americans do not support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a new survey found.

In a CNN/ORC poll conducted Sept. 1-4, 58 percent of Americans said they oppose building a wall along the border of the two countries, with 41 percent in support of the proposal.

The percentage of Americans against building Trump’s border wall has risen 11 percent since the same time in 2015, when 47 percent of Americans opposed it and 52 percent were in favor of it.

When asked whether the government should deport all immigrants in the country illegally, 66 percent of Americans said the government should not do that, with 30 percent in favor of deportation and 4 percent without an opinion.

The percentage of Americans in favor of deportation climbs when it pertains to immigrants who have been convicted of crimes while living in the country. Of those surveyed, 83 percent favor deporting convicted criminals who are living in the country illegally, with 15 percent against their deportation.

Trump has said he will require Mexico to pay for the building of the wall along the border. Only 9 percent of Americans think it is "very likely" he will be able to get the country to do that, 16 percent find it "somewhat likely," 15 percent "not too likely" and 59 percent do not think he will be able to make it happen.

Following a meeting with Trump in Mexico City, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto wrote a letter to Mexican newspaper El Universal stating his country would not pay for the wall.

"In my conversation with Trump about the border, I was also very clear: Mexico will not pay for any wall,” he wrote, as translated by The Hill.
