Louisiana Man Cashes In On Massive 45-Year Penny Collection (Photos)

A Louisiana man received a huge payout when he cashed in on a 50-year penny collection.

Ruston, Louisiana, resident Otha Anders began collecting pennies in the 1960s, picking them up off the ground and keeping them in water jugs.

After 45 years of collecting, he finally took 15 jugs to the bank to cash in. Weighing in at 5,400 pounds, the five-gallon jugs contained 500,000 coins and totaled $5,136.

“I would never spend a penny,” he said of his collection. “I would break a dollar before giving up a penny.” Anders said he looked at the pennies as a reminder to “give thanks” to God.

“I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful,” the 73-year-old said.

He was so committed to the honest way he acquired pennies that he turned down penny donation offers from family members, as well as an offer from the government in the 1970’s to give him a $25 bonus for every $100 worth of pennies he gave them.

“I wanted the inner satisfaction that God and I acquired this collection,” he said.

Anders told KTVE that he’ll use his newfound fortune to help pay a dental bill.
