Louisiana Lingerie Shop Accepts Food Stamp EBT Cards

A Louisiana lingerie store accepts Electronic Benefits Transfer cards from food stamp recipients as a form of payment.

The Kiss My Lingerie shop in Gonzales has a sign in the window informing customers they accept EBT cards. The store owner says they began accepting them 18 months ago in addition to all other forms of payment, noting that the store doesn’t discriminate against customers.

A woman who works nearby, who did not want to be identified, said she noticed more people going into the shop in the last few weeks, KVTV 5 reported.

"We were told anything could be purchased there, with the food stamp card," the woman said. "No child I know eats edible underwear. It's still the taxpayers’ dollars that are being used in a store like that and that really upsets me.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Family Services told WAFB that the EBT card, called the “Louisiana Purchase” card, is not just for food. Cash benefits can be used for other family needs, except for alcohol, tobacco, gambling and adult entertainment.

Lingerie and adult items do not count as adult entertainment, the state official said.

There are less than 10,000 people who receive cash benefits, compared to 835,000 who receive food-only benefits, the DCFS reported.
