Graham: 'Game Changer' If Russia Rumors Confirmed

| by Ray Brown

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called for an investigation into President Donald Trump's alleged Russia ties and for serious repercussions if they're confirmed.

"If there's contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence officials outside the norm, that's not only big league bad, that's a game changer," Graham said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

He continued: "Because if it is true, it is very very disturbing to me, and Russia needs to pay a price when it comes to interfering in our democracy and other democracies, and any Trump person who was working with the Russians in an unacceptable way also needs to pay a price."

The latest Trump-Russia story involves allegations that Trump aides were in contact with Russian officials during the campaign, anonymous U.S. intelligence sources told The New York Times.

What was discussed and who was discussing it has not yet been leaked, but the sources did tell The Times that they haven't found evidence that proves the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian intelligence to thwart former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's campaign and win the 2016 presidential election.

Nonetheless, the leak comes shortly after the resignation of Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who left his position after U.S. intelligence sources leaked information about phone calls he had with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. about U.S.-imposed sanctions.

Graham said people should be wary of Trump's seemingly warmer stance toward Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, according to The Hill. Graham is known to be a hawk toward Russia and constantly criticized former President Barack Obama for failing to more heavily arm the Ukraine during its confrontation with Russia in 2014.

"Donald Trump is an outlier when it comes to the Russians," Graham said. "Maybe it's just a policy difference. It's OK for Trump to disagree with Lindsey Graham and other Republicans on how to handle Russia. It would not be OK to have the Trump campaign receiving assistance from the Russians."
