Linda Ackley went to a Michigan hospital on Friday with severe stomach pains and believing she was suffering from a hernia. She ended up giving birth to a 10-pound baby girl.
Ackley, 44, was unaware of her pregnancy when she entered the hospital and had to undergo an emergency C-section.
According to The Daily Mail, the baby was particularly surprising because Ackley had significant abdominal surgery two years ago and was under the impression that she couldn't have children.
“She is our miracle baby,” she said when talking about her new daughter. Ackley’s husband Mike added: “Some people have nine months to prepare. I had hours.”
Mike was completely shocked by news of the baby and thinks that the moment when he first heard the news should have been captured for posterity.
“I wish someone would have taken a picture of my face,” he said. Mike added that the notion of calling his wife’s pregnancy a surprise “doesn’t even come close.”
The unexpected development brought on a range of emotions.
“I was happy and shocked at the same time, and scared,” Mike said.
The Ackleys have been married for 24 years, and this is their first child. The couple met while they were both in high school and started dating when he was a junior and she was a sophomore.
It is sort of understandable how Linda could have been pregnant and not realized it.
In February of 2011, she contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that attacks soft tissue. Because of the ailment, she spent a week in a coma and on a ventilator.
As a result of the infection, some of the muscles in Linda's stomach had to be removed. At the time, it was uncertain whether she would survive.
Linda incorrectly assumed that her baby’s movements were twitching nerves and expanding and contracting muscles caused by her stomach surgery.
