Sherri Papini Family Flees Home After Kidnapping Ordeal

| by David Bonner

Sherri Papini, the California woman who was reportedly kidnapped in early November and was then found on Thanksgiving Day, has gone into hiding with her family.

Papini, along with her husband, Keith, and their children, left their home in Redding, California, for an undisclosed location, reports the Daily Mail. One neighbor says that they are staying “way up north” with “wealthy relatives.”

Keith told ABC News that it was too difficult for his wife to be at home after what happened and that they might never return. Another neighbor concurred, telling the New York Post: “I don’t think they’re ever coming back here again.”

However, a family friend was seen walking their dogs, who are still residing at the Papini home, indicating perhaps that they do not plan to be gone permanently.

As for the abduction, it remains a mystery. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Department has no clue why Sherri was targeted, and no motive has been attributed to the kidnappers.

One speculation is that she may have been the victim of sex trafficking. That’s a theory raised by private detective Bill Garcia, who bases it on the physical abuse that Sherri allegedly endured.

According to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, among her injuries was a message branded into her skin. "I would think that that was some sort of either an exertion of power and control and or maybe some type of message that the brand contained," Bosenko said, according to the Daily Mail. "It is not a symbol, but it was a message."

Keith added further details of the abuse, noting that her nose was broken and her hair had been chopped off.

“I suspect based on the types of injuries Sherri incurred, the beatings, the broken nose, the cut hair, especially the chains and the branding, indicate that most likely it was one of these sex trafficking groups,” Garcia said.

Regarding Garcia’s theory, Bosenko told the Daily Mail: “We don't know if this was related to any cartel or sex trafficking. ... Right now we have no known reason why she was abducted, we do not know if she was specifically targeted or if this was a random abduction.”

Authorities say her injuries were not life-threatening, reports USA Today.
