Pictures of a badly injured young girl from Mississippi went viral on the Internet last week.
Lacey Harris, mother of little AvaLynn, 5, initially shared a picture of her injured young daughter online last week, and quickly, it started to go viral. Harris says that her daughter’s school contacted her on August 26 when, as they claimed, the young girl was injured in an accident. Upon talking to AvaLynn, however, Harris was shocked when her daughter claimed a classmate beat her.
“AvaLynn informed Lacey that she was assaulted by another student; that she was kicked repeatedly in the face until she fell off of the slide on the school's playground,” reads a post on the Justice for AvaLynn Facebook page. “The school informed Lacey were no teachers present when the incident occurred, and because of that, no one could prove whether or not another student had harmed Ava.”
Police have so far said that they haven’t started an investigation because there is no evidence that AvaLynn was beaten, besides her own account, but Harris has still retained a lawyer and is trying to spread her story online. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the mother pay medical bills and get money for time she has had to take off work to take care of her daughter.
“As much as my heart is broken for my daughter, I am also amazed by the outpouring of love and support from our family, friends, Oasis church family and our community,” said Harris in a post Friday night. “Thank you so much for your concern, kind words, prayers, thoughts, shares, and donation. We ask that you continue these kind gestures.”
The Pascagoula School District released a statement following outrage from people all over the world, and in it, they maintain that there is no evidence AvaLynn was harmed by another student.
“A student was injured while playing on the playground at Arlington Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. School officials responded to the situation,” reads the statement. “The parent was contacted and the student received medical treatment. No other children were involved in the incident. The Pascagoula School District remains committed to the safety of all its students”
