Jason Sharp of the New York Police Department has been suspended from the force for punching his 3-year-old son in the face.

Sharp is a veteran detective in the NYPD’s Brooklyn gang unit. According to court records, the 37-year-old struck his child after having a fight with his wife Michelle, 38. The fight occurred at the couple’s home in Nassau County. Alcohol was involved.

“I had an argument with my wife and punched the wall,” Sharp said, according to court records. “I had a few drinks today.”

The child was taken to hospital, reports the NY Post. The youngster is dealing with swelling and bruising on his right eye, cheek and nose. He told the police, “My daddy punched me in the face,” according to court records.

Michelle went downstairs during the couple’s argument so that she could call for help. “After a few minutes, I went back upstairs and found my son Connor crying with two swollen eyes, which were impairing his vision, and his nose and face were swollen,” she testified.

Detective Sharp has been a police officer for 10 years and has earned 14 awards over the course of his career. Twelve of those decorations were for excellent police work, and two were meritorious awards.

Sharp was charged with third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He has been suspended from the NYPD for 30 days without pay.
