Israeli Military Detects, Drops Bomb onto Hamas Terrorists Who Snuck into Israel Via Smuggling Tunnel

| by Lina Batarags

A night in Israel that could have ended in bloody disaster was closely avoided thanks to the Israeli military’s vigilance.

On Thursday night, 13 Hamas terrorists allegedly managed to enter Israel through a smuggling tunnel less than two miles from an Israeli community. The terrorists had armed themselves with rocket-propelled grenades, amongst other weapons.

As shown in a video distributed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the militants emerged from the tunnel, only to jump back in upon realizing they had been discovered.

The IDF reports that moments later, an Israeli air force jet dropped a massive bomb on them.

IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, who called the interception “a huge success”, stated that the Israeli military discovered the militants with the help of “different sensors.”

Another IDF spokesman, Brig. Gen. Moti Almoz, said the military had received an alert at 4 a.m.

“Units arrived at the area, and [the] terrorists were apparently surprised,” Almoz stated. “They began returning to the tunnel. The air force began attacking them from the air.”

Almoz went on to say that the “full picture”, in terms of Hamas casualties, was not yet known.

According to the IDF, no Israeli soldiers or civilians were hurt.

“We could have woken up to a horrible morning with many dead and wounded,” Almoz added. “Thanks to the alertness and preparedness [it] ended this way.”

In their haste to retreat to the tunnel, the terrorists left many of their weapons behind. The IDF later released images of the weapons.

The IDF reported that it did not know how many of the militants were struck, noting also that it had fired on the Gaza side of the tunnel entrance to block the militants’ escape route.

The attack attempt came mere hours before the start of Thursday’s five hour cease-fire, which the UN had requested and both Israel and Hamas had agreed to. (Although it is worth noting, Hamas quickly broke it.)
