An Iowa couple says a burger they bought from McDonald’s recently came with an unexpected topping: marijuana.
"I've seen a lot of stuff, but never something like this," said Lt. Jason Bell of the Ottumwa Police Department. "I really haven't had a lot of investigations where I've focused so much on cheeseburgers."
Police haven’t confirmed that the substance is marijuana, but they sent the plant material off to a lab for testing. They say the material is “consistent with marijuana.”
Police haven’t said who they suspect put the weed on the couple’s burger or why they would have done it. They also haven’t ruled out the possibility that the couple themselves could have put it there.

“We are exploring all possibilities at this point, and that factor is one thing we're considering with the investigation," said Bell. "It's more of a serious allegation against a business in the community. In any business, we want to make sure we come to the best possible conclusion on where it originated from."
Bell said police did find drug paraphernalia on one McDonald’s employee, but they aren’t sure if it’s related to the weed from the couple’s burger.
