A sickly stray cat that was adopted by a Canadian family will undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Colleen Clarke-Murphy and her family were quite surprised when they discovered that Mittens was intersex, which a veterinarian confirmed in October.

“Did I just hear you right?” Clarke-Murphy allegedly said following the vet’s confirmation.

Following the discovery, Clarke-Murphy decided that Mittens should undergo surgery to make the cat female, since she already had a male cat. However, the vet suggested that it was in the animal’s best interest to make the cat male.

“I mean, I really don’t know. I’d like for it to be a female, but it really don’t matter,” Clarke-Murphy said. “I think it’s got both personalities, so it really don’t matter.”

Finally, it was decided that the cat would be spayed, neutered and have reconstructive surgery. Although the total cost will average about $1,500, Clarke-Murphy said money is no object in the case of Mittens.

A friend of Clarke-Murphy’s plans to auction some items on Facebook to help pay the vet bill, which also includes fixing problems like bowel issues and Mittens’ difficulty with urinating.
