An Indiana woman was killed Sunday when she leaned out of a moving minivan to vomit and struck her head on an unknown object.

Amanda Ezra, 24, was reportedly sitting on someone else’s lap in the passenger seat when she got sick at 4:40 a.m. Sunday in Osceola. When the mother-of-three leaned out of the vehicle, an object outside struck her head. She died shortly thereafter.

Police believe the crash was a combination of drunk driving and freak circumstances, WSBT reports. Tim Spencer of the St. Joseph County's Fatal Alcohol Crash Team said Ezra herself had been drinking before she died.

There were four other passengers in the vehicle. The driver and another passenger tried to run away after the incident. Both were later caught by police.

Spencer said the driver, a male in his 20s, was arrested for operating while intoxicated (OWI), causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of a crime.

Her family said Ezra was trying to get her life back on track and had recently enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College to become a teacher.

"You've got a 24-year-old child, you've raised to be a young adult and has their whole life ahead of them and it's snuffed out because of a decision that was made and because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Michelle Lyman, who lives near the crash site, told WSBT. "It's tragic."

"It's just a shame of the amount of people that are getting killed in drunk driving accidents, it's just something that shouldn't be done," said her husband Mike Lyman.

"And now they're gone and now all that's left is broken glass in the grass," Michelle added. "It's awfully sad, it's shocking."
