A group of Assam locals in northeast India recently chased down and lynched a man after he tried unsuccessfully to kidnap a 15-year-old boy.
The boy, Mufizul Islam, is a resident of a village called Gaibandha. Islam was reportedly riding with his friend on a motorcycle when the two were attacked by four armed men around 8:30 a.m., according to The Assam Tribune.
The men assaulted the bike’s driver during the attempted kidnapping, but fled when they saw a number of locals approaching. One of the four alleged kidnappers, Jecky R. Marak, was caught by the angry village residents.
The locals reportedly lynched Marak, adding to a trend of recent public lynchings in the area. The Assam Tribune reports that there has also been a spike in the number of kidnappings for ransom occurring recently.
