High School Biology Assignment Turns into Lesson On Promiscuity

An assignment aimed at teaching high school biology students about DNA turned into a lesson in sexual morays when a Michigan parent complained about his daughter’s homework, answering a question for her: “We teach our children not to sleep around.”

Audri Basaj, a student at Romeo High School, was completing her 9th grade biology assignment when she came to a peculiar question, CBS Detroit reported. It asked the student to choose the results of a state-manded paternity test per a table that listed the blood types of a woman's possible baby daddies.

Answer choices included the cable guy, the mailman, the cab driver, the bartender and the guy at the club.

Her father, Larry Basaj, caught a glance of the provocative question and was outraged.

"What are they teaching ... what is ... I couldn't come up with the words. I was like oh my God. It's teaching them that it's OK to not know who it is because you can have the state help ya," he told local news station WDIV. "And if they can't help you they are going to take your child away, and it's not the way it is. I was beyond fired up last night."

He talked to his daughter about the question, leaving a note for the teacher on the assignment: “We teach our children not to sleep around.”

"Now that I see what it really means, I think it like depicts women in a really uncomfortable light," Audri told WDIV.

Basaj also reached out to superintendent Nancy Campbell, who said the assignment came from a teaching website. Though Basaj was the only parent to complain, she acknowledged that the concept of DNA could be taught without raising eyebrows.

"We are glad this parent brought this assignment to our attention," she said. "There is no need for any homework assignment to be offensive for parents or students."
