Navy Jet Crashes into Virginia Beach Apartment

Flames and dense, black smoke filled the air in Virginia Beach, Virginia, around the site of a military accident that occurred early Friday morning. Witnesses at the scene reported a Navy jet plummeting into a residential apartment building after both crew members ejected. At least two people are reported injured as a result of the crash.

The jet's pilot survived the crash and was being treated for injuries at an area hospital as of 11 a.m. Friday morning. Volunteer rescue squad member Pat Kavanaugh reported discovering another jet crew member who ejected just before the crash.

“He was in shock and still strapped to his seat,” Kavanaugh told WTKR.

The building struck by the descending jet was the Mayfair Mews apartment complex, according to a statement from Representative Scott Rigell’s office. Congressman Rigell’s district includes all of Virginia Beach.

The plane was a two-seater F/A-18. The Navy has yet to comment.
