Robert Hardy, the British actor who played Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in the "Harry Potter" movies, has died at age 91.
"It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Hardy CBE today announced his death, following a tremendous life: a giant career in theatre, television and film spanning more than 70 years," his three children, Emma, Justine and Paul, wrote in statement, reports HuffPost.
Hardy died from unknown reasons on Aug. 3 at a London retirement home for actors.
In addition to playing Fudge in four "Harry Potter" films, Hardy's role as former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the "Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years" won him a BAFTA award. He played Churchill six times during his career.
Hardy was also awarded a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1981 for his contribution to the arts.
In addition, Hardy acted in "Sense And Sensibility and "Frankenstein" and starred on the British television show "All Creatures Great and Small."
But acting was only one of Hardy's many talents and passions.
"Dad is also remembered as a meticulous linguist, a fine artist, a lover of music and a champion of literature, as well a highly respected historian, and a leading specialist on the longbow," the family’s statement noted. "He was an essential part of the team that raised the great Tudor warship The Mary Rose."
"Gruff, elegant, twinkly, and always dignified, he is celebrated by all who knew him and loved him, and everyone who enjoyed his work," the statement added.
Fans worldwide are mourning the loss of the beloved actor.
"He was a wonderful actor," wrote one person on HuffPost's Facebook page. "He was very scary in an Inspector Lewis episode in which he played a Rupert Murdoch type. And then, in a PD James work, he played a priest and former teacher of Adam Dalgleish. Thank you sir for your great performances."
"I loved his work," added another. "Rest in Peace."
