An Iowa man is in critical but stable condition after Des Moines police tried to Taser him, missed and then shot him several times in the chest.

Brian Lee Beeler, 41, of Des Moines was reportedly acting erratically when police responded to a domestic dispute call at his aunt’s home shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"She indicated he was a problem, he was causing problems in the apartment. He's got two knives stuck in his waistband," Sgt. Jacon Halifax told KCCI.

Police said Beeler would not cooperate. When he pulled one knife from his waistband and approached officers, one fired a Taser at him and missed.

Beeler was allegedly still coming towards the officers when both fired their guns at him.

Beeler was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center where he remains in critical condition Thursday.

"He chose to do what he chose to do last night, which resulted in the shooting," said Halifax.

Beeler was charged with theft, disorderly conduct and intoxication.

Both officers, Senior Police Officer Cody Willis and Senior Police Officer Peter Wilson, were put paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
