What are People Saying About: Starbucks Boycott & Guns?

article image

An anti-gun group started a boycott of Starbucks on Valentine's Day and said it will not call it off until the coffee chain bans guns in its shops. Starbucks said it stores simply comply with local laws. On the Opposing Views Facebook page, we asked the question, "would you go to Starbucks if guns were allowed inside?" Since guns are already allowed depending on where you live, there is a good chance that the person typing on their laptop next to you is packing heat. Here's a sample of what people are saying:

Joseph LaGrone: Guns ARE allowed inside & yes I DO go to Starbucks

Austin G. Lovett: Why would I not go? They are just abiding by local laws...are the protesters going to leave their county/city/state too?

Lynn Gleason: No. So sick and tired if this gun garbage. If you're someone who is feeling the need to tote around a gun everywhere, ask yourself what it is you're so afraid of, not 'Which other pointless location can I suddenly feel the need to be armed?'

Paula Qualls Gurley: I didn't go today, but will go twice tomorrow. Sick of those who try to extort companies who don't tow their "line". I don't own a gun but I don't need the anti-gun lobby in my business.

Thomas Todd: I will boycott Starbucks out of opposition to this policy. You rarely hear of crimes being prevented because an establishment allows customers to carry. How do we know they are capable marksmen and wouldn't shoot an innocent customer. Most gun owners are not good marksmen. That's why most gun accidents happen within families and in the home of the gun owner.

Richard Schnittger: Starbucks will set a record on sales today because of the millions of pro-gun people that showed their support. I didnt see one anti gun person.

Rebecca & Matt Eberharter: I go to Starbucks BECAUSE they are in favor of our constitutional right to bare arms. Anti gun people are ignorant.

Dennis Hayward: I willingly support ANY business that allows American citizens to exercise their Constitutional rights. Being anti-gun is the same as being anti-freedom.

Ricky Barnes: I fully support Starbucks' approach - whatever the local law happens to be, and in the interest of respecting the customer's maximum liberties, they follow the standards of the community in which the shop does business... Starbucks sells beverages, they aren't the police.

For you antigun morons who keep rambling on about guns not being involved in the political arena...

Guns are a HUGE part of the political process, moron, because GUNs are OWNED by VOTERS. Precisely why politicians fear the gun lobby which represents a HUGE percentage of GUN OWNING VOTERS.

Apparently you are too stupid to connect the dots on this one.

CRW's picture

To paraphrase... guns don't vote, voters vote, which has been my point all along. Moron. Again... you are echoing back my logic in way you think is palatable, all along missing my points about the role of guns in the *MODERN* political process.

The only action of gun owners that matter in the political process is how they vote... the end.

Do any of the anti concealed carry folks understand the meaning of "Free Fire Zone"? Declaring a store or area to be gun free only applies to law abiding people who are inclined to abide this stupid law and poor choice of a proprietor.

Carrying a concealed fire arm is a big responsibility that is not taken lightly by those who choose to do so. In many cases, those who actually benefit the most are the unarmed people in the area where an armed person chooses to defend the group from a perp with lethal force. Most if these situations are not reported in the news because the action did not result in anyone being harmed, even the perp.

The other issue is that statistics in every single state that actually allows legal concealed carry show that the crime rates all drop considerably after concealed carry is implemented.

Finally, if anyone bothered to consider that as the number of legal hand guns in circulation in the USA continues to rise, the number of accidental shootings, and gun related crime continues to drop. This is not a fluke. It proves that a free and armed society is a polite society. As a comparison, go to a computer and a gun swap event where there are more that a few hundred people in attendance. The computer geeks will push you and step on your feet and generally act in an unsociable manor. At a gun show, it is rare that you will even be bumped even in a crowded isle and if you are, you will here "please excuse me" immediately even from the people with tattoos. I know this to be true because I regularly attend both.

So, I would say support Starbucks decision and let the anti-gun group boycott Starbucks if the want. That way we will know who they are. It will no doubt improve the conversations inside Starbucks as a very positive side effect.

Let's put some realistic numbers on this:

Number of people killed in mass shootings -> less than 500 in the 20th and 21st centuries combined in the US.

Number of gun deaths in 2007 -> 31,244, including suicides and accidental deaths.

This idea that we need be armed everywhere to prevent these "free fire zones" is gun toting mythology.

The crime rate has dropped *EVERYWHERE* in the US since 1993. In fact, it has dropped the same or more in places where gun laws have been very restrictive in places such as New York. There are exceptions like DC, but this trend is consistent across the entire the United States. The reasons are better policing and longer sentences for violent criminals... and that's it. Guns haven't made it better, they haven't made it worse. Statistically, they haven't had any measurable impact whatsoever.

Before you start quoting that incredibly flawed book, "More guns, less crime," go read reviews by researchers who have analyzed the research methods behind those bogus numbers. The same research method flaws apply to gun control folks who have tried to blame all violent crime on guns. Legally owned and carried guns haven't had an impact one way or the other on crime.

Canada, which has very restrictive gun laws, has experienced a similar drop in crime, as have other *STABLE* countries with good economies and strong gun laws.

Gun rights are an established constitutional right. There is no need to exaggerate their importance with fake facts and anecdotes. The supreme court in Heller and McDonald have made it very clear what the second amendment means. The gun control people have lost that debate.

Anti gun slime are too ignorant or too damned blind to comprehend the FACT that CRIMINALs commit CRIME...ie BREAK the LAW....and therefore will NOT OBEY ANY DAMNED SIGN that says "NO GUNS"....or ANY other sign for that matter.

These brain dead Brady hive mind pods can't grasp the reality that if a sign says "NO GUNS ALLOWED" that it WON'T be the CRIMINAL who leaves his gun in the car. The conclusive PROOF of this fact is that so many shooting have taken place in "Gun FREE Zones" where guns are PROHIBITED.

But dont try to tell them this FACT or it may cause those last 3 brain cells to short circuit.

Starbucks sells coffee, they are not the police and I will exercise my rights as I see fit. Folks who have such a big issue with this I'll ask you directly "why does it bother you? Are you thinking of robbing the place, or someone in it?" But, should Starbucks cave into these idiots I will never go there again, It wont be some temporary boycott, I won't ever go back.

After reading so many posts from people like ajwark that are completely devoid of logical content, I've had enough. I can only embarrass these sad mental rejects for so long, then it becomes repetitious and boring. I prefer intelligent discussion and rational replies. There have been some of those on here. Some who have disagreed with me at least make decent points and have logical reason. But they are far outnumbered by the others, so I'm no longer watching this thread.

Have fun and stay safe.

If freedom means anything, it is the liberty to tell others what they do not want to hear.

Seriously, William Tipton, USMCVet, et al.... you guys try and try to talk sense into a libtard f'n moron like CRW and it's a waste of your time. They'll NEVER understand the Constitution and they'll NEVER understand liberty. They want the government to do everything for them and they actually believe that if we didn't have the right to firearms in this Nation that the Government would be all "yay! you and me hug a tree" with them whenever they had a problem with a new law or tax. The only reason the government doesn't tax us into poverty and push ridiculous intolerable laws on us is because in fact we have the right and the ability (for now) to throw them out on their asses BY FORCE. We did the same thing to the British, we put them out on their asses BY FORCE. Like it or not, THE GUN got results and founded this Nation. Did you think George Washington stood there across from the Redcoats and exercised his right to free speech? NO. HE SHOT THEM. Arguing with idiots makes your head hurt, it's hard to bring yourself down to their level and it makes intelligent men frustrated. It's akin to putting a square block in a round hole, won't work. They have no grasp on reality and never will. They're what we call "eaters" in my line of work... they offer nothing, bring no skills or abilities to the table but then turn around and consume all your supplies and want you to go forth and do for them what they don't have the intestinal fortitude to do for themselves.... essentially... "cowards" would be another word for CRW. Have fun exercising your "SPEECH" when you lose your "TEETH"... because without the teeth (2A) the speech (1A) is nothing but hot air.
