Washington, NH Chief of Police Steven Marshall was put on administrative duty after accidentally shooting himself in the hand on Friday.

At 7:30 that night, Marshall returned to the police station after target shooting and decided to clean his Glock 40-caliber handgun. He was unaware of an extra bullet in the gun magazine, which never fired.

While the gun was pointed away from him, Marshall pulled the trigger and an explosion of gases seared his pinky finger and outer palm.

He immediately radioed Washington Fire and Rescue, grateful that his friends were able to aid him.

According to doctors, Marshall miraculously avoided all of his major structures, ligaments and tendons. Though there will be some ugly scars, he is expected to make a full recovery.

“My hand’s still all wrapped up not usable for daily use,” he said. “I expect to be back on full duty for the beginning of July.”

Marshall became Chief of Police just one day after the incident, for which his friends now apparently tease him. However, Marshall says he would rather be teased than mourned over.
